What Are Student Loans and Where to Find Them?

There are basically two places where you want to actively look for student loans. The first would be the federal government and the second would be private lenders. In order to be considered for any of the loans given out by the federal government, you are first going to fill out a lot of paperwork called the FAFSA which stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This paperwork is then sent to the colleges that you think you are most likely to apply to.

There are four main federal student aid programs:

1. Federal Stafford Loan
2. Federal Plus Loan
3. Federal Graduate Plus Loan
4. Federal Consolidation Loan

The Federal Stafford loan is issued in the student's name, is mainly based on need and a credit check is not required. The sweet thing about this loan is that it does not have to be repaid until after the sixth month the student graduates from college, chooses to leave the college or university or stops attending college at least half of the time. Some colleges and universities offer the Stafford loan directly through our U.S. Government.

These are commonly called Direct Stafford Loans. The schools that offer these loans are usually known as Direct Lending Schools. Many other schools may offer the Stafford Loan but it will be through banks and other lenders. Schools that do this are commonly known as FEEL schools or Federal Family Education Loan schools. You will definitely need to choose a lender if you choose getting your Stafford loan through a FEEL school.

A Federal Plus loan is made in the parents name. Although a credit check is a requirement, it is not as stringent as a credit check may be for another type of consumer loan. After the loan is fully dispersed, repayment of the loan begins. Some colleges and universities offer the PLUS through the U.S. government and others offer it through other banks and lenders.

The Federal Graduate Plus loan is similar to the PLUS loan for parents. The one major difference is that it is made in the graduate student's name. You must keep in mind that you are obliged to repay this loan once it is fully disbursed. You may choose a deferment option as long as you are attending college at least half-time. Check with you financial aid officer for any other particulars.

Federal loan consolidation is for the student who is in repayment status. It is also for parents who want to extend the repayment period on any current PLUS loan and obtain a fixed interest rate for the rest of the life of the loan. All of your federal student loans may be able to be put into one loan using the Federal Consolidation Loan. Once you decide to consolidate, this locks in the interest rate you must pay on your loan.

If your costs are too much for federal loans to handle, then you may want to try to find a private student loan. These are made by banks and through other lenders. Their purpose is specifically for educational expenses. However, these loans offer the flexibility and convenience that are not found in any other federal loan programs. In order to obtain a private loan, you must have good credit and you will also have to have a qualified co-signer. Once you find a loan that meets all of your needs, it is easy to apply online and even get an instant response.

Why Free Education is a Must?

In a developing nation like India with over a billion populations, it is important to have facility which provides free education to poor children. Even the economy is growing fast, though sometimes the markets get into bullish mode, but overall it’s every where declared that India is the future global leader, a thing that makes every Indian feel proud. But if some one cares to look around, then one grows a little skeptic about the development one gets to hear of. You can notice lots of poor people around who are not getting those basic facilities that we usually take for granted. The condition that strikes terror in anyone’s heart are the poor children of these poor people whose future as well as the present is so dark.

With no financial support or a proper place to live, without the guarantee of three time food, they have to start working at a very early age, when they should have been in some school. Those who are not working or begging for living are left for the day by their parents in the street to fend for themselves. Their parents too don’t have an option other than these. Sending to school to receive the primary education is adopted by few parents, but most of them ignore this and put their kids to work some where. Life has not allowed these children to have a choice to choose the way of education. But does that mean those of us who have given the opportunity to help someone turn a blind eye on this problem saying that it’s not our headache to provide for others who are less fortunate than us. It’s the work of the state administration. After all we dream of making this world a better place to live. So, start lending help in achieving that target.

To start with, it would be better if we start concentrating towards providing free education to those who cannot afford it. Setting up education societies would be a very good idea where poor children will be provided with free education and other facilities like medical facilities, sports kits, stationery and clothing kits for free which lead to an all round development of the children.

Whether you are living in India or abroad, your contribution in some good and dedicated charitable organization working for providing free education would bring cheers in the life of lots of little children who would be living a miserable life other wise. Guru Nanak Garib Niwaj Education Society is founded by Baba Amar Singh Ji is working towards this goal.

Finding the Best Private Student Loan

Students who do not meet federal requirements for financial need can use the route of a private student loan. Apply for a private loan is free. The loan is based on the student's creditworthiness and not the need for aid as does the federal loans.

Many lenders offer private student loans to students or their parents and the application process is simple and free. The loan requirements are usually less stringent and the repayment options are affordable for young professionals. A private student loan is a great way to finance the education of any student that needs financial help. Below you will find things that you should know and things you should consider.

Things You Should Know :
  1. Student loans can be used not only to pay the fees but also for lab fees, dues for associations and housing.
  2. A student can have an educational loan even though the tuition is covered by a grant.
  3. A student who is eighteen years or above in age, can apply for a student loan.
  4. Most of the student loan is deferred for repayment until the student completes the education or leaves the school.
Things You Need To Consider :
  • Private loans for students are not given without a co-signer or a credit report.
  • Credit unions give student loans if a vehicle or a boat is provided as collateral.
  • During the cumulative credit period, a student has the option of paying or not paying the interest part of the loan. It should be noted that paying the interest on the loan while attending school will significantly reduced the amount due when the student starts paying the loan after leaving the institution.
  • Student loans are to be repaid in ten years. Nevertheless, longer repayment facilities are provided to large student educational loans.
It is not difficult to finding lenders, because most financial institutions offer some form of student loan.

Always take the time to investigate lenders in your immediate area and find out exactly what kind of loans they offer. Compare the different interest rate and terms to get the best offer available.
